You got it the other way around buddy.

You will run leaner if you advance your timing and vice versa for retarding the timing.

I hope this "tiny" bit helps.

    yaa.....but.....by retarding the timing ...
your car will run a little hotter....
what was it at before????why did you change it..??
    also...
just installed the rev hard.....did you run a pipe to the wastegate or do you just leave it open.....???

Timing has a dramatic effect on EGT TRM. Your EGT went up as a direct result of your taking the timing down. I went the other way. I had my timing at 11-12 degrees for the longest time as a conservative measure, and wondered why my EGT was always 850-870. Now with 14 degrees timing it rarely goes over 800 at WOT. It's not unusual for me to see 700+ while cruising on the highway either... esp. with the A/C on.

    Ok, here's the story...

Like I mentioned before, the turbo kit was installed about 2 months ago. A friend of mine did it for me and also did the timing. While visiting another friend yesterday who has much knowledge on turbo Hondas, he pointed out to me that my timing looked way advanced. After reading it with a timing gun, it turns out that it was in fact advanced all the way to about 20 degrees!

Well, he set the timing for me to I think it was 11. And since then the EGT shows hotter temps. Why does it run hotter when retarded and what causes it to do so? Is it a lack of something?

...luck me, got away with 20 degrees timing on a turbo GSR for 2 months huh? smile

I ran a 6 inch dump tube from the wastegate pointing towards the ground just so I don't dirty up the bay with soot. Does that answer your question?

Thanks for all the help guys

Retarding the timing doesn't change the fuel mixture. However, it does cause more combustion energy to be blown out the exhaust as heat.

800 deg cel egt's are normal on most of the turbo hondas I know of... as long as it stays below 900 you will be fine... and as far as the diferent egt's in diferent gears, that is normal too, because of the increased load in higher gears..

Hey guys, wondering if you can help me with this one.

I've had the kit on for roughly 2 months now and have had no major problems until now. I have noticed that in the past when cruising at about 75-80mph in 5th gear, my EGT would read right around 700 degrees celsius. I just noticed today that it's running around 100 degrees hotter. Nothing has changed except for a timing retard (now at 11 degrees). I understand that retarding the timing will make the car run a bit lean, but since I don't have a A/F meter I can't tell if that's what's causing it to run hotter. But still...100 degrees hotter?? It stays around 800 degrees now and if I accelerate a bit in 5th at 75-80 mph, it's quick to jump fast to 840 degrees and higher but I give off the gas at that point. It's never done this before and I'm a bit worried.

Also noticed today, while cruising in 4th at 50mph, it runs around 740 degrees Celsius, and again quick to jump hotter if I accelerate in 4th. Before in 4th at that speed it was in the high 600s and wasn't that fast to get hot if I accelerated as it is now.

    A bit about the car...

94 GSR (79k miles) with a rev hard kit. Stock motor. STR gears set to stock. STR fuel rail. Stock injectors. MSD fuel pump used in conjunction with the stock pump. VAFC which I've tried to adjust by giving it more fuel (12% more) and it doesn't help. I push 9 lbs boost.

Thanks for any advice you can give...
